Rowan University
Project Description: Streambank Restoration

Rowan University is a public university located in Glassboro, New Jersey with a satellite campus in Camden, New Jersey. Enviroscapes under contract to Rowan University provided streambank restoration activities at 26 separate sites along the Chestnut Branch of the Mantua Creek that runs through the campus. The Chestnut Branch stream is in the Mantua Creek Watershed. The length of the Chestnut Branch that Enviroscapes conducted stream bank restoration activities included 2,200 linear feet of stream comprised mainly of freshwater wetlands and state open waters. The most prominent problems found at the sites included severe sloping banks, severe erosion, trees with exposed root systems, and lack of well-established vegetation.

Pike Run Habitat Restoration Project
Project Description: Streambank Restoration

Enviroscapes was subcontracted to minimize the excessive bank erosion that had been occurring along Pike Run. The section we participated in is very flashy. Due to urban development upstream, stormwater fills the stream quickly during a rain event, and the flow is extremely fast. The amount of water and the velocity of flow during storm events have caused the stream to become channelized, with straight-shot parallel banks, as opposed to natural meandering bends.

These extreme flows have eroded the stream banks resulting in common 5-6 foot vertical banks above the water level, disconnecting the stream from its floodplain. Additionally, much of the streambed has been washed away and, in many areas, the bottom of the stream now consists of bedrock.

The existing stream conditions include little to no viable in-stream habitat for a healthy macro invertebrate (insect) community. Macro invertebrates are at the bottom of the food chain; loss of their habitat reverberates through the surrounding ecological community.

Upon notice to proceed, Enviroscapes mobilized to the site and established a staging area and installed various soil and sediment control measures including installing 250 linear feet of silt fence and 250 linear feet of construction fence, and created a construction entrance, which was eventually removed upon project completion. Enviroscapes then installed seven (7) single-wall log deflectors within key sections of Pike Run to deter and deflect stream water flow off the streambank and channel them towards the middle of the stream. This technique successfully reduced erosion along the banks. Following installation of the seven deflectors, Enviroscapes planted and seeded the formally eroded banks to allow natural stabilization of the stream banks to occur.

Cherokee Parcel LLC and York Parcel LLC
Project Description: Streambank Restoration

Enviroscapes performed streambank restoration services at the old Cherokee Parcel LLC and York Parcel LLC site in Hanover Park, New Jersey. The site was an old landfill, which operated from 1957 to 1980, used for the disposal of paper, wood, steel, metals, plastics, other bulky waste materials and residual sand that settled in the milling processing tanks during recycling activities. Enviroscapes provided slope reconstruction, seeding, installation of erosion control fabric and Coir Logs, planting, and maintenance and monitoring inspections over a five (5) year period.

Loantaka Brook Streambank Restoration
Project Description: Streambank Restoration

Enviroscapes conducted streambank restoration services at Loantaka Brook, a tributary of the Passaic River, in Convent Station, New Jersey. The main headwaters of Loantaka Brook arise in Morris Township. A second, smaller stem arises to the south and west, where it makes its way through a culvert and down along a stretch before joining the first stem also in Morris Township. A second headwater tributary of Loantaka arises near South Street in Morris Township. This tributary flows across South Street into the Loantaka Brook Reservation.
