Company Overview/Mission

Enviroscapes was founded by Shawn (Sean) Goodwin and Edward (Ed) Blanar to focus on their main passion; the restoration of native landscapes.  The name Enviroscapes reflects the interrelationship between the cleanup of environmentally impaired land and the need to restore these sites to an environmentally and ecologically sound manner.  Enviroscapes mission is to improve the overall environmental and ecological value of degraded sites through the planting of native plant and grass species with the ultimate goal of improving air, water and soil quality for the benefit of the wildlife and the planet.

“Until the 1980s the federal government acted in accordance with the notion that wetlands were part of a hostile wilderness that needed to be tamed. The Army Corps of Engineers, in particular, has a history of draining swamps, part of a long process of wetland reduction. Wetland area in the lower 48 states has declined from over 220 million acres in the 16th century to a current 105.5 million acres, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Only recently have the many benefits of wetlands come to be widely recognized. Besides providing habitats for birds and aquatic and threatened species, wetlands are useful for water storage and purification, flood prevention, timber and food production, education and research, and recreation. Nineteen seventy-two saw the passage of the most important act of wetland regulation, the 404 program of the Clean Water Act, which mandates permits for the release of dredged or fill materials into U.S. waters.  While the 404 program was part of a broader environmental movement, the Emergency Wetlands Resources Act of 1986 signaled a new concern with protecting wetlands.”

Company History

1990

Sean Goodwin and Ed Blanar first met in 1990.  They became friends almost instantly based on their shared concerns about the environment, family values and personal integrity.  Both were environmentally conscious, Sean Goodwin with a degree in Horticulture, had always been self-employed and “field orientated”.   Ed Blanar held degrees in Earth Science and Engineering and coming from a corporate structure was the “office orientated” type.  They concluded that the restoration of the environment was not only very important, but necessary. Laws were being enacted to support environmental restoration and being able to work in a field that you truly enjoyed would be a life-long dream come true.

Beginnings: 1991

1991

Realizing they were intelligent, honest, hard working and could achieve a high potential together, Enviroscapes Inc. was established on March 21, 1991.   From these humble beginnings, Enviroscapes Inc. would grow to a strong, well-established company with a primary focus in “Wetland and Streambank Restoration.”

1992

Enviroscapes first clients included: AMAX Realty Development Corp., New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College), Dames & Moore, and Tami-Githens, Inc.  Enviroscapes very quickly noticed that many of the landscape specifications produced for projects lacked the optimal grass species and plant material for the specific sites.  Many of the specifications were just boiler plate documents or “pulled from the shelves” that were doomed for failure.  With their backgrounds in horticulture and earth science, they were able to provide insight to clients, environmental consultants and contractors on the merits of different types of grasses and native plants leading to sound ecological planning.

Enviroscapes quickly established itself as a trusted source for honest assessments of project plans and specifications. They were becoming known in the industry for satisfied clients and honest, hard work.  The company grew as clients spread the word about Enviroscapes quality and service.

1995

By 1995 Enviroscapes experienced steady growth and found new clients in McLaren Hart, Dames & Moore, ENSR and OHM Remediation Services Corp.   Employing six people, Enviroscapes performed large-scale seeding and landscape activities at hazardous waste sites which appeared to be a good match for the ever growing remediation market. With the increasing interest in the preservation of wetlands, projects included wetlands components as well.
